A Hurricane Season Checklist for South Florida Homes
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Stores get crowded once a storm is named, so the best time to prepare is before the season starts.
Know your zone
Look up your evacuation zone on Miami-Dade County’s website and plan where you would go and how you would get there. Follow official instructions if an evacuation is ordered.
Build a storm kit
- Water: one gallon per person per day for at least seven days.
- Non-perishable food, a manual can opener and pet food.
- Flashlights, batteries and a charged power bank.
- A first aid kit and a two-week supply of medications.
- Copies of important documents in a waterproof bag.
Protect your home
Install shutters or have plywood ready, trim trees, and bring in or tie down outdoor furniture and solar lights before a storm arrives.
After the storm
Never run a generator indoors or in a garage; carbon monoxide can build up quickly. Make sure your CO alarm works, stay away from downed power lines and avoid flood water.
